Toured all of Hong Kong’s best Japanese-style watering holes? Then it’s time to head over to Japan itself for more refined boozing: here’s one suggestion for newcomers to the Tokyo bar scene.

Zoetrope

If it's Japanese whisky you want, Zoetrope is the place to head. Tucked away on a back street in Nishi-Shinjuku, this intimate, dimly lit bar boasts a collection of bottles that's unrivalled anywhere else in the city: there are 300 varieties on offer, many of which are no longer even on the market. Whisky geeks will relish the chance to sample rare bottlings, while beginners can start with a sampler set of choice malts from big dogs Suntory and Nikka.

Studio Himawari

If you've never tried karaoke in Japan, this Kabukicho snack bar is the place to start: the owners accompany their customers on live electric guitar and saxophone, the song selection is riddled with classic rock, and the clientele ranges from pro wrestlers to off-duty staff from neighbouring watering holes. There's a ¥3,000 cover charge that'll get you access to the mic and some snacks, while drinks start at ¥500. To top it all off, Himawari often stays open way past its advertised closing time of 7am, with jam sessions extending deep into the following day.
