Yakushima
Yuki Masuko
The primeval forest found in the centre of Yakushima Island is a mysterious place where kami (spirits) are said to inhabit the 2,000-year-old sugi (Japanese cedar) trees. These moss-covered trees grow high up on the mountainside to form a canopy through which sunlight streams, creating a scene reminiscent of Hayao Miyazaki’s fantastical anime ‘Princess Mononoke’. One of the huge tree stumps, known as Wilson’s stump, even forms a perfectly heart-shaped opening (pictured). Yakushima is part found 60km off the south-east coast of Kyushu, and is accessible by hydrofoil or slow-car ferry, or aeroplane. Vehicles are not permitted to enter the forest, so only those capable of making the 10-hour round-trip hike from the trailhead can look upon this sublime sight.
