Never mind what exhibit is on – just spending a few moments in the Teshima Art Museum’s wondrous building is bound to make you feel serene. Designed by artist Rei Naito and architect Ryue Nishizawa, the museum is perched on a hill overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. Sunlight pours in through the huge opening in the ceiling, and the shape of the structure feels almost organic. Here, calmly taking in the warmth, sounds and winds of this peaceful island will help you notice small details, such as the water springing up here and there from under the floor, and the changes in ambience that accompany the movement of the sun. Every three years, from spring to autumn, the Setouchi International Art Festival takes over Teshima and 11 other island and ports in the area, forming a humongous gallery of contemporary art.
