Mt Koya

In 816, Kukai, also known as Kobo Daishi (The Great Teacher Who Propagated Buddhism), built the main training hall for Shingon Esoteric Buddhism on Mt Koya. The mountain, along with its surrounds, is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the title 'The Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range'. In 2009, it was awarded three stars by the Michelin Green Guide Japan. One of the most popular attractions is the pilgrim guest house experience, in which you can stay overnight at one of the Mt Koya temples. Most pilgrims today arrive at Ichinohashi (First Bridge) by bus, then walk two kilometres to visit the inner sanctuary at the Kongobu-ji head temple.
