Keisuke Tanigawa

Did you know you don’t actually have to leave Tokyo to see Mt Fuji? On clear days you can glimpse her symmetrical peak from rooftops around the city. Or you can climb one of Tokyo's 50-odd 'Fujizuka' and pretend you're hiking the real deal, even though these miniature Mt Fujis are only a few metres high. They were built in the late Edo period out of Mt Fuji’s lava to give everyone a chance to experience a piece of the sacred mountain. For more abstract viewing, you can visit one of the many sentos (traditional bath houses) featuring impressive murals of Mt Fuji. The tradition of creating large-scale paintings of the mountain in sentos began nearly a century ago, and at one time were a part of Tokyo’s downtown culture with several artists becoming known for their Fuji art. Over the years, the trend has faded and these days most murals are made from tiles. At Daikoku-yu, however, you can still soak in a steaming public bath while viewing the mountain in an image that was created by one of the few remaining Fuji artists, Morio Nakajima.
